Another Dimension of Discipleship

Another Dimension of Discipleship
Mk 11:1-10

1 Now when they drew near Jerusalem, to Bethphage and Bethany, at the Mount of Olives, He sent two of His disciples; 2 and He said to them, “Go into the village opposite you; and as soon as you have entered it you will find a colt tied, on which no one has sat. Loose it and bring it. 3 And if anyone says to you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ say, ‘The Lord has need of it,’ and immediately he will send it here.” 4 So they went their way, and found the colt tied by the door outside on the street, and they loosed it. 5 But some of those who stood there said to them, “What are you doing, loosing the colt?” 6 And they spoke to them just as Jesus had commanded. So they let them go. 7 Then they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their clothes on it, and He sat on it. 8 And many spread their clothes on the road, and others cut down leafy branches from the trees and spread them on the road. 9 Then those who went before and those who followed cried out, saying:

“Hosanna!
‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!’

10 Blessed is the kingdom of our father David, That comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!”

Introduction:

It's the last year of Jesus earthly ministry, his very last four days before Calvary.
Jesus is at the Mt. of Olives, His secret prayer grounds.

It is from his secret place that He gives divine instructions to his disciples to do something that will elevate his name in the earth, and cause others to know him and praise his name .

This text rings with the importance of next level ministry. It reveals how important it is to understand “another dimension in discipleship”… we should all be striving to have a heart of service and worship for our soon coming King.

Inside of this passage we are going to see humanity worship Christ like they never had in the gospels before.

My sermon aim this morning is that the New beginnings Church would understand what the Lord wants of us as we journey on earth and what the lord requires of us as we do life together in His Church.

I have three points to share with you , and they are as follows:

1. The Disciples Assignment
2. The Disciples Ability
3. The Disciples Authority

It's my prayer that we can glean from this text today as we head into holy week, and as we encounter our Savior, that our worship might be for real.

1. The Disciples Assignment
Now when they drew near Jerusalem, to Bethphage and Bethany, at the Mount of Olives, He sent two of His disciples;
2 and He said to them, “Go into the village opposite you; and as soon as you have entered it you will find a colt tied, on which no one has sat. Loose it and bring it.
3 And if anyone says to you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ say, ‘The Lord has need of it,’ and immediately he will send it here.”
Note:
When we arrive at this portion of the text we see that Jesus has sent his disciples on a special mission ahead of his triumphant entry into the City of Jerusalem.
Their special mission and assignment is to go into the village and find a Colt, that nobody has ever used, untie it and bring it to Jesus.
This is special for there are three things hidden in the assignment…
1. They are to go to a divine location
2. They are to obey a divine vision
3. They are to take heed to divine instructions

According to the text, because Jesus has a special need for the disciples to complete this task, this assignment is divine in every manner.
Its divine because its God asking them to work on his behalf in the earth!

Because Jesus is going to use their efforts and their labor to bring himself honor and glory in the earth, this simple but detailed assignment has divinity written all over it!

Observation:

From the secular sense this doesn't appear to be all that important. But from the biblical sense this mission is of great importance because it's going to be a part of the fulfillment of scripture.

From the biblical sense this assignment has eternal implications, if the disciples get this wrong, and the Christ doesn't fulfill the prophecy of Zechariah, the promised redemption of mankind is at stake, and Gods plan for salvation could be in jeopardy.

Note:
The bible declared in Zechariah 9:9 “Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion!
Shout, O daughter of Jerusalem!
Behold, your King is coming to you;
He is just and having salvation,
Lowly and riding on a donkey,
A colt, the foal of a donkey.

So you see if these disciples don't get the assignment right, the prophecy is not fulfilled….

Jesus can’t come into Jerusalem on a camel, stallion, wagon, uber or a lift …he's got to come in on a donkey’s baby, a Colt!

This assignment is critical for the Disciples. They got to get this right! They got to obey all that he has commanded, in order for the scripture to be fulfilled and the Messiah’s destiny to be revealed.

This assignment is of great importance and
it’s of a critical nature. They got to follow
Details according to the text.

Application:

As disciple of Jesus Christ in the 21st Century we too have a divine assignment from the King of Glory.

Our assignment is to do the 3 critical
things that the Lord asks of us…that the scripture might be fulfilled!
Just like the disciples from Jerusalem we too…
1. We are to go to a divine location
2. We are to obey a divine vision
3. We are to take heed to divine instructions
When we do this we too will have a glimpse of that which is colt-like…

We will be able to find that which is…
1. Tied down
2. Untamed
3. In custody
4. Unbroken
5. In need of a master

We are to go into our villages (homes, schools, jobs, communities) and find those modern day colts, which are tied down, we are to loose them and bring them back to Jesus.

Note:

In our Villages we can see the people who are tied down with the works of the flesh; they are untamed in that they cannot control their sinful addictions to adultery, fornication, uncleanliness, filthiness, idolatry, witch craft, hatred, quarrels, jealousy, drunkenness, rioting, homosexuality, false religions, pride, envy, racism and substance abuse. (Gal: 5)

In our Villages we already know the ones that are Untamed, in custody, unbroken, and in need of a Savior.

We also know and Understand that the only one who can set them free is the King of Glory. They can only be loosed by the unconditional love, grace and mercy of Jesus Christ.

We are the disciples that the Lord has chosen to use in the earth to do this through our actions toward others and through his word.

Note:

Their traditions will never loose them, their rehab centers will never loose them,
Their self help groups will never loose them, Their physic hotlines will never loose them, Their gossip circles will never loose them, Their incarceration sentences will never loose them, Their organized religion will never loose them, Their false doctrine will never loose them, Their false ideas will never loose them.

Only Gods powerful Love, Grace & mercy can loose humanity.

I believe New Beginnings that we as a church understand the nature of this calling and have understood the importance of this challenge.

So unless we get dull of hearing lets remember what happened when the story of the preacher got told…

Story:

“ The young preacher thrilled his congregation with his first sermon—a challenge to “gird their loins” for Christian service and living. Then, to their dismay, he preached the same sermon the following Sunday. When he confronted them with the same ringing message on the third Sunday, his flock felt something must be done.

“Don’t you have more than just one sermon?” blurted a spokesman to the pastor.

“Oh, yes,” he said quietly, “I have quite a number of them. But you haven’t done anything about the first one yet!”

Lets not have Pastor preach this same point next week, lets do something about finding that which is lost this week in our Village…amen? (can I get a witness)?

II. The Disciples Ability

4 So they went their way, and found the colt tied by the door outside on the street, and they loosed it.

Note:

When we come to this portion of the text we get to see the disciples, move out in obedience, and exercise faith in what Christ has called them to do.

They believed that they could do what God asked them to do. They believe that they would find what Jesus said to look for. They believed that they could handle the task of locating the colt and bringing it back to Jesus.
1. They were familiar with the area.
2. They knew where to look.
3. They knew what they were looking for.
4. They knew how to complete the task that was assigned to them.
5. They were trained, they had been with him for three years, so they understood the instruction

Observation:

I can’t help but notice the similarities in the text today for our lives. We too are just like the disciples. We understand what the Lord is asking of us. We understand how to go find those who are tied down.

We understand where we are to look, and who we are to talk too. We understand that there is a need for the savior and we understand that we have been trained by the very best to go and complete all that He is asking of us. We understand that we too have been with the Lord.

Note:

The bible says that “ they went their way, and found the colt tied by the door outside on the street, and they loosed it.

Here’s what I see in this verse…though they understood, and they obeyed and they followed, and they comprehended his words they still had to physically do the job!

This ministry assignment called for three things…

a. It called for physical labor ( they had to walk to retrieve the colt & bring him to Jesus)
b. It called for trust in the master (they had to trust that Jesus knew what he was talking about)
c. It called for them to work; with the untamed, out of control, the wild and the tied down.

Observation:

Working for the Lord is work! You must roll up your sleeves and get involved in the life of the one who is untamed, out of control, unbroken, rude, stubborn, selfish, mean, cold, distant, angry, high, foolish, unappreciative, angry, unloving, greedy, vicious, hate-filled, racist, anti-god, anti-church, anti-humanity, heady, proud, know it all, full of themselves, liars, double liars, perverted, rotten, spoiled, brattish, and out-right evil.

You got to work to bring those who are tied down to Jesus. It aint easy.

The disciples knew what they had to do but it involved work!

Note:

“They found the colt tied by the door outside on the street, and they loosed it.

When they found what Christ was looking for, notice where they found it?

• It was by the door…outside on the street. It was tied in between two locations…inside and outside.

• It was tied between two possibilities…inside and outside.

• It was tied between two ways, inside and outside.

• It was unable to loose itself and go in any direction, it needed a guide and someone to lead it in the right direction.

Observation:

Humanity is just like this colt…

• Tied down in between two ways
• Their way, and His way
• The right way and the wrong way
• The good way and the bad way
• The Holy way and the Un-holy way
• The way of destruction and the way of eternal life

Humanity is there, and they are waiting for someone to get involved and unite them and bring them to the one who can use them for His honor and his glory!

Question:

Is there anybody here that can remember the people who came to you in your bondage and got involved with your circumstances?

Is there anybody here that can remember the people that stepped into your world and got involved with untangling you from the stuff that had you tied down?

Is there anybody here that can remember how stuck you were between your way and His way?

Is there anybody here that can remember what it was like to want to be free, but not be able to get free?

Is there anybody here who doesn't have amnesia?

• Do You remember how bound you were?
• Do You remember how tied down you were?
• Do You remember how difficult it was to live in that place?
• Do You remember how dark it was before you came to Jesus?

Is there a witness in this house?

Im hunting for witness that has gone from being tied down to being set free, because a disciple came along and helped you to get untangled with the cares of this world!

Is there a disciple here, that can testify about how good it felt to be used by the Lord to set somebody free!

• Even when it was difficult, you stayed at it!
• Even when you had your doubts you stayed at it.
• Even when they kicked and bucked against you, you stayed at it.
• Even when they gave you mouth you stayed at it.
• Even when they didn't appreciate you, you stayed at it.
• Even when they refused to follow you, you stayed at it.
• Even when they seemed impossible to reach, you stayed at it.
• Even when they were rebellious like an ass-colt, you stayed at it.
• Even when they were stubborn, you stayed at it!

And now that they have been changed, you bless God for the opportunity to untie somebody and bring them to Jesus.

Can I get a witness?

I like this because the text said that when they obeyed the word of the lord they were able to loose the colt! They set it free.

Observation:

Isn’t this encouraging? Im glad that God could use these men like this…

“I read a short story about Wycliff bible translators this week and it said; “
Translating the Bible into new languages can mushroom and diversify.

Wycliffe Bible Translators has now expanded to the point where it needs not only linguists but also doctors, nurses, teachers, pilots, mechanics, printers, artists, accountants, radio technicians, agronomists, and a wide assortment of secretarial and administrative help to assist them in the work of making disciples.”

“Virtually anyone but the bartender can be used,” says Wycliffe head Cameron Townsend. “And if he gets converted, [the bartender] we’d even like a second look at him.”
—Christianity Today

In short God has need of people in they ministry…Everyone has a ministry in Christ.

He can use any man and any woman, any boy or any girl to make disciples if they are willing to Go!

All they need to do is be willing…

III. The Disciples Authority

5 But some of those who stood there said to them, “What are you doing, loosing the colt?”

6 And they spoke to them just as Jesus had commanded. So they let them go.

7 Then they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their clothes on it, and He sat on it.

Note:

When we arrive this portion of the text we get to see a potion of the work that we don't normally see in discipleship. I call this the dunamous-dynamic!

Its called this because they actually are working in the ‘authority” of the Lord. Dunamous is one of the greek words for authority.

It's the same word that Jesus would give them after Calvary to continue this labor in his name.

Here we are looking at a “pre-calvary” glimpse, of what it would like to work on the kings behalf in the earth, for his purpose, plan and priority.

The text says that when they untied the colt, they were met with opposition….

1. Somebody tried to stopped them!
2. Somebody challenged what they were doing!
3. Somebody had something to say!
4. Somebody didn't like it, and they had an opinion about what they were doing and how they were doing it!

Here it is…..
“ 5 But some of those who stood there said to them, “What are you doing, loosing the colt?”

Observation:

I stopped by to tell you that whenever you are working for the Lord in the earth, there will be obstacles.

There will be interruptions. There will be questions. There will be obstructionist. There will be those who feel as if it is their business to question you and to impede your progress!

They asked the disciples…

“What are you doing, loosing the colt?”

Note:
For the record, I think it was a good thing to ask what the church was doing? It was a good thing to inquire of what their motif was, because it gave them an opportunity to witness to the fact of why they were doing this for the lord!

In other words they could testify of who they were working for and why they were working for him!

They could say why they were acting in this manner, and what motivated them to untie this colt that somebody had tied down!

Here it is …

They could give an answer for the assignment that they had accepted and that they were on!

I believe every disciples should be questioned, so that we may all identify with and testify on behalf of the CHRIST who is calling all men to be untied!

The text says that “ 6 And they spoke to them just as Jesus had commanded. So they let them go.

7 Then they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their clothes on it, and He sat on it.

Note:

When we see this portion of the text we get to see what happened after they were questioned.

The bible says that they gave an answer for their actions Just as Jesus told them to do!

1. They followed the word of the Lord
2. They obeyed instructions and fulfilled the will of the Lord for this assignment.
3. As a result they brought him what he asked for, and those who questioned them, release them to do the work of the Lord.

Here it is…

When we obey what the Lord has asked of us to do, we too will be rewarded by God for our obedience.

Our reward for obedience is the completion of the task that he sent us forward to do!

The reward for our labor, is the privilege of finishing what he sent us to do.

They brought colt to Jesus!

Note:

They told those that questioned them, that the Lord has need of the colt.

The Lord! (The Kurios, ie. The supreme ruler, the chief of all authority, the creator!

They could say this because the master had use of the colt’s services!

• Jesus wanted to tame him.
• Jesus wanted to use him to ride him and elevate himself upon him for the triumphal entry.
• Jesus wanted to receive praise from those around him.
• God uses his creation to elevate himself upon them that his creation may bring him honor/praise!

Here it is…

• God wants to tame humanity.
• God wants to break humanity from being wild and use them in the earth to bring him praise and honor.
• Then when man is broken God receives praise from man.
• Then God can use them as a vehicle in the earthly realm. (for his praise and glory)

Conclusion:

• The colt went from being tied down to being set free.
• The colt went from being wild and unruly to being tamed and meek.
• The colt went from being out of control to being under control.
• Only Jesus brings control to an out of control situation.
• Only Jesus brings control to a reckless situation.

Testimony:

My lifestyle was wild and out of control, I was unruly, defiant and disobedient.

I needed to be broken from gangs, drugs, lies, violence, sexual promiscuity and deceit.

Jesus brought control to an out of control situation and tamed my life by breaking the strong holds the held on to me.

God loves humanity and has no problem in taming humanity.

Check the record:

God has been breaking men from the beginning of time:

1. He broke Abraham from his sinful ways and tamed him for his service.
2. He broke Jacob from being a trickster and tamed him for his service.
3. He broke Moses from the Egyptian way and tamed him for his service.
4. He broke Samson from his defiance and tamed him for his service.
5. He broke Jonah from his disobedience and tamed him for his service.
6. He broke Apostle Paul from his pride and tamed him for his service.

Out on the cross he broke sin & deaths hold on humanity.

1. He died for our sins to use us in his service.
2. He was buried in our place to use us for his service.
3. He was raised from the dead with all power of heaven and earth in his hands to use us for his service.

As I close this text, I can’t sit down until I tell you what else they did when they brought that Colt to Jesus …

[Do y'all want to know? ]The text said that “they threw their clothes on it, and He sat on it.”

Here it is…
When the disciples saw the Lord was waiting in anticipation for the colt…
Something happened in their hearts that made them fulfill scripture …
They took off their stuff and used it to usher in the kingdom…
They laid they're clothing on the colt…they covered its nakedness!
They covered its inability to cover itself in the presence of the King…
They covered it so that JESUS could elevate HIMSELF upon the once untamed beast…
Here it is …
They did what the church is supposed to do in the earth… “cover one another”
They saw an opportunity to help the one who surrendered itself to be used by the king, that scripture might be fulfilled.

Note:
And when they did this a spontaneous praise broke out in the crowd!

Every body started giving of their stuff, Every body started singing, Every body became a worshipper…
This was Acts chapter 4 stuff…only it was “Pre-Pentecost”!
They took of their possessions and laid them at the feet of the King!
They laid palm branches so that the colt could walk on them as he carried the Lord in the Praise-processional!
Their worship was so powerful they sang that great Hymn of the Church …
Hosanna-Hosanna, Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord !
[“Save Now- Save Now”]
“ Blessed is the kingdom of our father David, that comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!”
I want to join that 2000 year old processional and say what hill song-sang…

I see the King of glory
Coming on the clouds of fire
The whole earth shakes, the whole earth shakes

I see His love and mercy
Washing over all our sin
The people sing, the people sing

Hosanna, Hosanna
Hosanna in the highest

I see a generation
Rising up to take the place
With selfless faith, with selfless faith

I see a near revival
Staring as we pray and seek
We're on our knees, we're on our knees

Hosanna, Hosanna
Hosanna in the highest

Heal my heart and make it clean
Open up my eyes to the things unseen

Thats my prayer New beginnings, that I would see the Salvation of our Lord in this Generation…

Hosanna means “Save Now”…I wanna see your families saved!

• I wanna see your friends saved!
• I want to see my friends Saved!
• I wanna see your communities saved!
• I want to seem communities Saved!
• I wan to see you enemies saved!
• I want to see my enemies saved!

I wanna see humanity redeemed by the blood of the lamb!

I want to experience “another dimension of discipleship.”

And while I got your attention, let me tell you this….

· If I were you, and I didn’t have a relationship with Jesus, I would get out of my seat and I would come running and bow down to him now. [Hosanna]
· If I were You and I was not a Christian I would give Him My Life, right here and right now!
· If I were you I would surrender my rights and give up my plans, and join the Christian Army
· If I were you and I was on my way to hell, I change directions By coming to Jesus
· If I were you and I was sick and tired of being sick and tired, I would give my life to the Lamb of God.
· If I were you and my mind was all messed up, I would give my heart and soul to Jesus, so He could fix my mind.

Story:

In the penitentiary they have a question that is addressed to all incoming inmates. The question is who are you down with?

1.Who are you gone run with while you are here?
2.Who’s going to have your back when things Jump off?
3.Who’s mob are you going to belong too?

Because in there the rule is you must belong somewhere.
Once you belong that’s where you will do your time.

Well, it’s the same thing on earth, you must decide who you gonna run with while you are here!

On earth you must decide who you going to mob with!
On earth you must decide whose gone have your back when things jump off!

You can’t have Jesus and the devil too!
You got to choose whose going to be your God.

There is no middle ground, you are on one-side or the other.

A No vote for Jesus is a yes vote for the devil.

· If I were you I get on the Lord side! There is victory over here
· If I were you I get on the Lord side! There is power over here
· If I were you I get on the Lord side! There is salvation over here
· If I were you I get on the Lord side! There is real joy over here
· If I were you I get on the Lord side! There is real peace over here
· If I were you I get on the Lord side! There is hope over here
· If I were you I get on the Lord side! There is help over here
· If I were you I get on the Lord side! There is a way out of no way over here.

You ought to come on and Join the Christian army while you still got a chance!

Our savior is a Hero, Our savior is a conquerer, Our savior is King, Our Savior is the Prince of peace, Our savior is the Lord of Lords

Our savior is on his way back for us. Soon and very soon we will be going to see the King.
He is on the way, Our ride Home is Nearing everyday.

· RIDE ON KING JESUS, No man can not hinder thee
· RIDE ON KING JESUS, No man cannot hinder thee
· IN THAT GREAT GETTING UP MORNING FAIR THEE WELL (FAIR THEE WELL)
· IN THAT GREAT GETTING UP MORNING FAIR THEE WELL (FAIR THEE WELL)

· RIDE ON KING JESUS, No man can not hinder thee
· RIDE ON KING JESUS, No man cannot hinder thee
