"A Brand New Look at Evangelism"

"A Brand New Look at Evangelism"

Mark 6: 53-56

53 When they had crossed over, they came to the land of Gennesaret and anchored there.

54 And when they came out of the boat, immediately the people recognized Him,

55 ran through that whole surrounding region, and began to carry about on beds those who were sick to wherever they heard He was.

56 Wherever He entered, into villages, cities, or the country, they laid the sick in the marketplaces, and begged Him that they might just touch the hem of His garment. And as many as touched Him were made well.

Introduction:

New beginnings, as we get ready to head to South Africa, to serve thru A.B.I, I am excited to know that the same gospel that was preached over 2000 years ago, still works today.

That same gospel that turned the world upside down in the first century is yet shaking global communities today with the power of the Holy spirit.

When we get there the work will be waiting for us. Orphanages will need visiting. We will visit hospitals where we can pray for the sick. Go into Townships and proclaim the gospel thru evangelistic campaigns.

New beginnings it’s preaching time, and I can’t wait to carry this great gospel to distant shores where there is a hunger to hear it, see it, experience it and feel like it they have never felt it before.

This message is the best message in the whole wide world, and its worth everyone of telling somebody who has never heard about it before.

Thats why we are lifting up evangelistic-missions today in this service. We have come to remind you that God has a need to be seen in the community, and that great things happen when the people see Jesus!

Background:

At the time of this text, the ministry had taken off and now the Masters work was known throughout all of the region. The testimonies of his miracles, casting out of demons, feeding the multitudes and the healing of the sick had all gone out now, and people were flocking from towns and villages to be healed by Jesus.

Where ever the Master was that was where the people wanted to be. This was called His year of popularity!

The Master became a house hold word, known for his miracles and sermons proclaimed…the people could not get enough of the ministry of Jesus.

1.This text opens up for us a profound truth that will transform the life of a local church.

2.If the church ever got this contagious with the person of Christ, and the preaching of the gospel, our city would come running to meet the Master.

3. This text is a divine challenge for the child of God. A challenge that calls us to lift up the person of Christ that the world would get to see and know Him.

There are four things I want to lift from this passage today for your hearing. They are truths that inform us of what will happen when the people you know see Jesus.

[A Recognized Location, A Recognized Leader, A Remembered Lesson and A Renewed Life]

I. A Recognized Location

53 When they had crossed over, they landed at Gennesaret and anchored there.

When we arrive at this text I am arrested by this verse that calls our attention to a very specific fact. [Its powerful and yet simple]
When the disciples sailed across the sea they were headed for a special place.

· This place where they landed was a chosen place
· This place where they landed was a central place
· This place was divinely arranged by the Master.
· It was a desired place, and a place that the lord could use for His honor and his glory.

Note:

Jesus chose to be in a location where all of the sick could have easy access to him. He Anchored in Gennesaret!

When he anchored there…he literally had them to tie down there so he could serve for awhile.

· This location was going to be a healing station for all those sick in this region.

· The work of Christ was going to impact the lives of Mankind, in this particular ministry location His assignment could be carried out.
It was a strategic spot for those who worked on the sea and those who worked on the land.

Note:

As we pray about our Mission trip today, we can’t help but see that South Africa is also a strategic location (A place to Anchor)

We too must consider those that don’t have access to Jesus.

We must consider how we can position ourselves to be in a location where everyone can come and feel welcomed to see Jesus.

The same can be said for Fresno today! The Central Valley is a strategic place to anchor for the Lord.

• It's a place to capture the sick
• It's a place to look for the broken
• It's a place to search for the wounded
• It's a place to care for those who are hurting and in need for a savior.

South East Fresno is prime real-estate for the Kingdom. I thank God that I landed right here on this campus…

Im gonna drop my anchor, and gonna set my gaze on how many souls I can win until the Lord returns.

We all gotta Anchor somewhere, and we got to be in a location that will give people access to Jesus!

II. A Recognized Leader

54 As soon as they got out of the boat, people recognized Jesus.

Note:

When we come to this portion of the text we get to see a direct response of the people in the area when they see the disciples and Jesus, get out of the boat.

Note:

According to the text they respond in an unusual manner…..They respond as if they are glad to see him and as if they know him!

Here it is….

1.The people in this part of the country remembered Jesus from His previous visit.

2.They recalled the things he did, and the things he had said.

3.They saw many people healed and miraculous things done by Him. So when He showed up again in their community, they recognized who He was.

Observation:

The master was so powerful, no other rabbi, savior, healer, teacher looked like him.

· Jesus looks like nobody else
· Jesus does what no one else could do
· Jesus was a sight for sore eyes
· Jesus was the talk of the town
· When he was gone, Jesus was missed, when He left their city no one could take His place

Note:
1.When they saw him they knew it was the Master
2.When they saw Him they knew it was the one who could heal the sick
3.When they saw Him they knew it was the one who could raise the dead
4.When they saw Him they knew it was the one, who could give sight to the blind
5.When they saw Him they knew it was the one, who could cast out demons

Application:

When the people of the Valley get a glimpse of Jesus, in our walk, they will recognize Him too.

· When the people of the Valley get a glimpse of Jesus, in our talk, they will recognize Him too.

· When the people of theValley get a glimpse of Jesus, in our attitude, they will recognize Him too.

· When the people of the Valley get a glimpse of Jesus, in our homes, they will recognize Him too.

· When the people of the Valley get a glimpse of Jesus, in our witness, they will recognize Him too.

· When the people of the Valley get a glimpse of Jesus, in our worship services, they will recognize Him too.

· When the people of the Valley get a glimpse of Jesus, in our preaching, singing, testimonies, living and giving, they will recognize Him too.

· When the people of the Valley get a glimpse of Jesus, they will come running asking what must I do to be saved.

Observation:

Have you ever wondered why…

· We don’t have people in the city beating down our doors to see Jesus?

· Because we don’t look like Christians who have been with Jesus.

Have you ever wondered why…

· We don’t have people in the city beating down our doors to see Jesus?

· Because we don’t walk like Christians who have walked with Jesus.

Have you ever wondered why…

· We don’t have people in the city beating down our doors to see Jesus?

· Because we don’t talk like Christians who have had an intimate conversation with Jesus.

Have you ever wondered why…

· We don’t have people in the city beating down our doors to see Jesus?

· Because we don’t have Christians who are guilty of communing with Jesus.

Have you ever wondered why…

· We don’t have people in the city beating down our doors to see Jesus?

· Because we don’t have Christians who are filled with the stuff that Jesus did, said, and talked about

When The People see Jesus there is an attraction that they cannot resist!

Oh New beginnings! I don't know about you but Im dying to be this type of believer who is on fire for Christ, and who looks like him, walks like him, talks like him, serves like him, gives like him, preaches like him, teaches like him, imitates him, desires him, follows him, obeys him, sacrifices like him and talks with the father like him.

I want to be with him, near him and in him so that I may know him.
Because He is so attractive, when the people see Jesus they will come running from all around to be with the one who is all together lovely!

Question:

• Is there anybody here today that just wants to be with him?
• Is there anybody here that wants to see him?
• Is there anybody here that wants to see what he will do thru you and in you?
• Is there anybody here that is simply longing for more of Jesus?
• Is there anybody here that wants to see folks that you know and love come running unto him for salvation?

III. A Remembered Lesson

55 They ran throughout that whole region and carried the sick on mats to wherever they heard he was.
Note:

When we arrive at this portion of the text we get to see a remarkable sight for the eyes of a disciple.

· When the people recognized Jesus they were motivated beyond motivation to be in His presence.

· No one had to prod them to come to worship Jesus, they ran throughout the region to bring people to him!

· No one had to beg them to come and see the Master, they ran throughout the region to bring people to him!

· No one had to do special programs or provide tricks and treats in order to see Jesus, they ran throughout the region to bring people to him!

· Nobody had to tell them to evangelize

· Nobody had to tell them to share the good news

· Nobody had to tell them to go get somebody else

· Nobody had to tell them how important it is for people to meet Jesus

“They ran throughout the region to bring people to him!”

Note:

· They knew the Master and had been in His presence before, And they could not wait until He was back in their area again.

· They were so motivated they ran around the entire region, bringing those that could not come because of physical problems.
· They carried them into the presence of the Lord.

Note:

Christians can take a good look at evangelism in this text and learn a thing or two from those who were hungry for Jesus.

1.We can learn that it is the hungry who bring the hungry to be fed.

2.It is the blind who received sight who bring the blind to get sight.

3. It is the beggar who found bread who tells another beggar where to find bread.

When you are running for Jesus because you love to see Him do for others, what he has done for you, “Running is easy”!

Here it is….

1.Running to him is easy when it’s your brother who needs to be healed.
2.Running to him is easy when God needs to do something for your baby girl.
3.Running to him is easy when God is needed in the hospital!
4.Running to him is easy when you need a Lawyer in the court room!
5.Running to him is easy when your spouse is at the dope house!
6.Running to him is easy when your life is on the line!
7.Running to him is easy when Momma’s on her death bed!

But when all of your ducks are in a row and money is in the bank. Bills are doing alright, do you still need Jesus? Are you glad that He is in the vicinity?

Question:

I wonder today…..

· Have we lost our love for Jesus?
· Have we lost our passion for the savior?
· Have we lost our enthusiasm for the cross?
· Have we lost our eyes for Jesus?
· When was the last time we ran through the Central Valley bringing the sinner to see Jesus?
· Why have we not filled this place up with those who have not seen Jesus?

Observation:

If we were to take our cues from this text then we would do good to know that when they saw him again…they acted like they missed him…

When they saw him again, they knew what they had in their presence, and took advantage of being with Him again…

When they saw him again, they appreciated what he had done the first time and they begged him to do it again….

Here it is….

Some of us need a “Do it again Lord Spirit” because we haven't seen him work in such along time….

Some of us need a “Do it again Lord Moment” so we can recapture that good old feeling from the Holy Ghost.

Some of us need a “Do it again Lord Activity”, because we got amnesia and forgot how it felt to see him work in our lives!

There has got to be something said about remembering what he did for you the first time that you saw him.

There has got to be something said about remembering the work he did for you the first time that you encountered him.

I wish I had about 20 people to Holla at me …. “Do it again Lord, Do it again”!

IV. A Renewed life

56 And wherever he went-into villages, towns or countryside-they placed the sick in the marketplaces.

They begged him to let them touch even the edge of his cloak, and all who touched him were healed.

Note:

The first thing that arrest me in this text is that Jesus did not just stay around in Gennessaret, But went into other places.

This was the master’s way of conducting Itinerate outreach ministry in this new location.

The people were able to reach out to Him because he was accessible.

· The people reached out to the Master, and he wanted to be reached out too. (Jesus loves people)
· The people went to where the Master was, and he wanted to be where they were. (Because Jesus loved people)
· The people went to have their needs met, and Jesus was available to meet their needs!
· The Master went to where the sick were. He had a heart for the sick, he had time for the sick, he had a word for the sick, he had a ministry for the sick. Jesus loved being with the sick people of the region.
· The Master went to where the hurting people were.
· The Master went to where he could have constant access to the spiritually poor.

Note:

The one place he served others was The Market Place:

This was a common location for community activity. It was a place where people went to get what they needed.

It was a place were community connected.
It was a place where goods were requested.
It was a place where goods were exposed for sale, and where public assemblies and trials were held (Acts 16:19; 17:17).

Note:

Here is a spiritual picture of the tragedy of man; Man was sick and dying on the auction-block of Sin, but Jesus has come to the market place to heal and to make them whole. He came to the market place to purchase them back from the auction block of slavery.

The Master went from the village to the town to the countryside doing these great miraculous works for the kingdom.

Note:

The second thing we see in this text is that they ask to touch the hem of his garment! (The edge of his cloak)

What the people did here was remember what happened to a woman who had been miraculously healed by Jesus in this manner, and simply wanted to imitate the previous work.

But more importantly they had a supernatural faith they said if He did it for her than maybe he can do it for me.

The miracle here is not in the clothes!

It was in the faith of the sick that said this is God’s Son in Him is everything I need for life.

Here it is…
1.By Faith, if I touch His clothes I can be made whole
2.By Faith, if I touch His clothes, I can see again
3.By Faith, if I touch His clothes I can walk one more time
4.By Faith, if I touch His clothes, I can have my leprosy dissolved
5.By Faith, if I touch His clothes, I can have my hearing restored
6.By Faith, if I touch His clothes, My issue of blood can be dried up too!

Conclusion:

When the people see Jesus in our time, they too will see the supernatural.

· They will see the old wino, who by faith, is sober now after 20 plus years! And walking with Jesus by Faith.

When the people see Jesus in our time, they too will see the supernatural.

· They can see the gang member, who by faith is free from prison, preaching and living of the gospel helping his community instead of tearing it apart.

When the people see Jesus in our time, they too will see the supernatural.

· They can see the old liar who by faith only tells the truth now that she has been set free

When the people see Jesus in our time, they too will see the supernatural.

· They can see the old adulterer, who by faith is living a happily married life, now that He has Jesus

When the people see Jesus in our time, they too will see the supernatural.

· They can see the one who was once proud, who by faith now humbly walks in the community of the saints.

For we walk by faith and not by sight.

· It is our faith in Christ that will draw people to Jesus
· It is our faith in Christ that will light up the world
· It is our faith in Christ that will cause the doubter to change his mind
· It is our faith in Christ that changes public policy
· It is our faith in Christ that will curb gang violence
· It is our faith in Christ that will stop abortion
· It is our faith in Christ that will end poverty
· It is our faith in Christ that will end pornography
· It is our faith in Christ that will combat racism
· It is our Faith in Christ that will end drug abuse
· It is our faith in Christ that will put marriages together again
· It is our faith in Christ that will clean up our streets
· It is our faith in Christ that will clean up our prisons

Why? Because Jesus is the answer for the world today, above Him there is no other Jesus is the way!

That’s why Calvary is what it is, a place of redemption, restoration, and reconciliation.

At the Cross Jesus completed the Salvific work of the Father for Mankind.

Because of all he did for me I am saved and Im sure about it….

Story….
A Negro, carrying a bag of potatoes on his back, was asked by a skeptic: “How do you know you are saved?”

The Negro took a few steps and then dropped the bag. Then he said:

“How do I know I have dropped the bag? I have not looked around.”

“No,” replied the man. “You can tell by the lessening of the weight.”

“Yes,” went on the Negro, “that is how I know I am saved. I have lost the guilty feeling of sin and sorrow and have found peace and satisfaction in my Lord and Saviour.”
